This year 33 students with physical disabilities from Mairehau, Papanui, Cashmere and Hillmorton High Schools took part. For competition purposes, there were three grades: individual throwers for boys and girls respectively, as well as the ramp pairs. To help keep things rolling smoothly on the day, senior ParaFed Canterbury Boccia club members Jeremy Morriss and Craig Gadsby came along to inspire the youngsters and assisted with refereeing duties.
Although the atmosphere was one of friendly competition and enjoyment – as many of the students have already formed strong friendships between schools - the young athletes showed plenty of skill and ability, strategic thinking and determination when it came to the crunch. Despite a large and enthusiastic team from Cashmere as well as some strong performances from the Papanui and Hillmorton players, Mairehau High School swept the honours with Lomi Pio winning the boys throwing grade; Jasmine Riwaka winning the girls throwing grade; and a combined effort in the ramp pairs from fellow school mates Junior Polo and Ashley Ward plus Patrick Eden from Hillmorton.
The Cantabrians are now looking to improve and grow this annual event for next year to include more schools and future Boccia stars. With the continuing rapid rise of numbers and skill levels within the schools and at the local club, be sure to keep your eye out for the next generation of talent from red and black country!
