(Applications close 30 SEPTEMBER 2011)
Here is a wonderful opportunity for our more able Cerebral Palsy members, between the ages of 16 and 20yrs, who have a sense of seafaring adventure. Each year, with support and generous sponsorship from the Lions Clubs of New Zealand, spearheaded by the Karori Lions Club, the Spirit of Adventure Trust is able to take 30 young people with physical disabilities on a special 5-day voyage. However the successful applicants will not be lying around on deck sunbathing they will actually be part of the crew. The crew trainees are split into four watches with two - three experienced buddy’s assigned to each watch. The emphasis of this programme is to provide opportunities to face challenges outside their usual boundaries, gaining confidence and achieving things that previously might have looked impossible.
For safety reasons applicants should be mobile and able to negotiate stairs (with a little help if required), and have reasonable balance and hand movements to enable them to participate in sailing the ship.
The 30 successful applicants will come from around New Zealand and are selected by referrals from schools and organisations. One of the main goals of the trust is to capture community spirit through the medium of the sea and this goal is clearly achieved, over the five days, as a group of individual novice sailors meld into a team.
As said above applications close 30 SEPTEMBER 2011. The cost is $400 – including travel which may be covered by 5 Carer Support days.
