A Worthy Read

The Office for Disability Issues newsletter is an informative publication, jammed packed with details of upcoming forums and conferences.

In the latest issue the reader is informed that the Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA) has received funding from Te Pou, (Ministry of Health), for the provision of Consumer Leadership and Training.
DPA are holding three, two-day leadership development forums in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch. The Auckland Forum is planned for 28 and 29 August 2010.  Expressions of interest are sought from disabled people who are either already members of DPA or from those interested in joining DPA

This initiative is being undertaken to enable DPA to build organisational capacity and foster leadership, both within DPA and the wider community.

Parent2Parent is holding a Conference entitled “No One Alone” on 20-22 September 2010.

The conference is seeking to address the issues of isolation and loneliness as major disabling factors in the lives of people with disabilities.  It will include personal accounts and experiences from disabled children and adults, the families' perspectives and experiences and the perspectives and experiences of teachers, principals and others working in education.

The newsletter begins with a message from the Minister for Disability Issues, the Hon Tariana Turia, who recently attended the Community and Disabilities Services Ministers' Conference in Adelaide, Australia.

“It was an opportunity to share and learn about initiatives with Australian Federal, State and Territorial counterparts working in the disability areas,” she said.

The Minister was especially interested in hearing about the Australian National Need and Supply Model. This model helps explore different scenarios to give a better measure of the need and prediction of future demand for disability support services.

“We may be able to learn from this work and it is a conversation that I am keen to continue. It is also important that as the work evolves that the voices of the disability sector are also heard and have input,” she said.
Hmm. The Office for Disability Issues newsletter is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Director of Boccia Position
We are pleased to announce that Luke Morriss has been appointed to the position of Director of Boccia for the Cerebral Palsy Society. Luke will begin this full time position on the 1st Sep 2010 and will be based at the Society's office in Royal Oak in Auckland. I am excited about this initiative that the Board has agreed to. The sporting benefits for our members as well as the strengthening of Boccia in NZ will be its outcomes.
I look forward to Luke spearheading this initiative.... Regards Harvey Brunt
