Boccia circuit in full swing

With the boccia “Battle of the Bridge” on the horizon on the 17th & 18th July, the Northland Boccia Association hosted a one day tournament, held at the Kensington Stadium, in Whangarei. By all accounts it was a resounding success, as over thirty players participated, including nine from Auckland.

“Although billed as a fun day, and it certainly was, the competition was as strong as ever. Everyone gave it their best shot (no pun intended) as old rivalries and friendships were re-newed. Being a pairs competition also allowed for new friendships to develop as Northland players were teamed with the Auckland visitors,” Said Bob Lindsey from Allways Mobility Service

“I gotta say I'm getting to be a big fan of pair’s boccia,” said Lynn Slade who has recently helped set up a boccia club in Auckland’s western districts. “We had a great time at Northland’s Mid Winter Pairs Competition. My daughter Mandy was paired up with Kayela Benseman and I have to say how impressed I am with both of them. They played 6 games in a row with only a few minutes break between each one and managed to hold off all comers until the last game, to come second overall.”

Lynn was impressed with the organisation with the appearance of Santa who handed out lolly pops “to those who needed the extra energy burst”. Northland Boccia also provided home cooked cakes, biscuits and an extremely tasty homemade vegetable soup.

Everyone agreed congratulations are due to Kathy Bingham and her crew for a great day out.

Hopefully everyone will take up the challenge again when the BOCCIA “BATTLE of the BRIDGE” commences in mid-July.

At day's end the Northland competition winners were:

  • First - Penny Burdett and Robin Lilley
  • Second - Mandy Slade and Kayela Benseman
  • Third - Kimberley McLean and Anthea Hurst
  • Fourth - Kim Copedo and Yung Chen
  • Sportsperson - Annette Hawkins
