Join family that Cares

Communicare is a great way to express your creative abilities and have a lot of fun at the same time. There are twenty-two communicare centres around Auckland where disabled and elderly people gather once a week, to perfect their arts and crafts skills. There is even an exciting option of learning a new skill from the craft therapist, who pops into each centre when requested. When hands tire of needlework or the fine arts, there are always numerous card and board games on the go.

Outings and guest speakers are frequent events at the centres, but the highlight of the year is either a huge bowling tournament or the Communicare Olympic Games. The bowling tournaments and Olympic Games are held on alternative years. The sports of balloon volley ball and table hockey are included in the games programme.

There is an annual subscription of $15 and each centre asks for a small weekly contribution to help with costs of resources. The money also goes towards supplying morning tea and lunch which includes scones, pikelets with jam and cream, sausage rolls and soup in the winter

The trading tables at the Royal Oak Communicare centre are jammed pack full of quality goods made by its members. The tables are overflowing with well made items such as handbags, cushion covers and even knee high beds socks.

Royal Oak supervisor Pat Stenersen typifies the dedication of Communicare volunteers.

“I said I will run the centre until Christmas. That was thirteen years ago,” laughs Pat.

But she enjoys the family atmosphere that each centre naturally creates.

It’s definitely an excellent time to join up as Communicare is about to celebrate its 50th year of supporting the elderly and disabled. This very month of March the organisation has booked the Ellersile convention centre and will serve lunch to 600-800 people.

Perhaps if you join quickly enough, there could be a seat for you?
