Tykes on Trikes

It was an exciting Christmas for a group of kids at Conductive Education (CE) in Auckland.

They were the beneficiaries of an initiative by Chris Haverkort, the father of Brooke, who is a graduate of the CE program. Chris had built a cool trike for Brook, which was the envy of many parents. The trike has evolved and different sizes have been made as Brooke made her way into the teenage years. Chris approached the Society to fund a fleet of trikes that could be used by kids with cerebral palsy so that they could keep up with their peers, as well as gaining therapy at the same time.

The Society agreed to fund 10 trikes. Eight of these were delivered before Christmas. The Society has recently agreed to increase the total number of trikes to 15. The trikes are leased to families at $10 per month. When the child grows out of a trike, they will be eligible for a larger trike. The monies paid will be used to recondition the old trike and then reissue it to a new youngster.

The trikes that Chris has developed look cool, are extremely sturdy and should provide many years of use.

I would like to thank Chris for bringing this initiative to the Society, to Tracy Wadsworth for her support with putting some procedures into place and to Brooke, without who these trikes would not have come into existence.
