Theatre introduces “Boys Next Door”

Sunday evening at Onehunga’s Dolphin theatre is certainly a pleasant way to stylishly complete the weekend. The dress rehearsal for the theatre’s next production “The Boys Next Door” was being staged and members of the Cerebral Palsy Society had been invited to be part of the audience.

The boys next door soon had the audience at ease as they introduced themselves, invited us into their lodgings and politely suggested wetake a seat. Norman, Arnold, Barry and Lucian are stepping out into the big wide world; a world that labeled them intellectually handicapped.

The insights were plentiful, as humour abounded intermingled with a large dose of pathos. Norman is an accomplished donut smuggler, Arnold wants to cross the Atlantic by train, Barry plans to teach golf at twenty cents a lesson and Lucien is Spiderman’s best friend. Jack their minder tries to make sense of it all.

“Once a week a dance is organised where these people get together to socialise. I can’t make up my mind whether it’s the saddest place I seen or the happiest,” confessed Jack. A little later Jack muses over the fact that his life moves on but the guys’ lives stay the same.

Norman, Arnold, Barry and Lucian lives are definitely worthwhile though as they try to make their own sense out of the world full of neighbours, girlfriends and the occasional midnight mouse hunt.

“The Boys Next Door” runs from 19th April - 10th May 2008 and is thoroughly recommended.

Dolphin theatre’s invitation to attend future dress rehearsals is on going for Cerebral Palsy members. There is ample parking and accessibility is good except for a small annoying front door step but even this obstacle is overcome with support from very friendly Dolphin theatre members.

So come along and join us for an evening of quality entertainment
