One hundred and seventeen people registered for the Cerebral Palsy Society’s social afternoon at Auckland’s Ellerslie Racecourse, Piccolo Room. For many it felt like a school reunion as memories tried to match past youthful looks to aging faces. It was great to catch up with old school mates and to share life experiences. Everyone marvelled at Gayle Russell’s artistic talent as she produced a portfolio of her paintings during the afternoon. Gayle is a much valued member of the mouth and foot painting association. Her paintings are exquisite, a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and artistic expression. We all shared in the reflective glory of Bruce Burgess’s determination, to conquer Mt Ruapehu during the 1980’s.When the film of the event “All the way up there” was screened everyone was totally absorbed with the adventure and the humour, as Bruce prepared for the Mt Ruapehu |

climb, with his mountaineering mate Graeme Dingle. (Unfortunately Bruce’s health is not the best at the moment and we all wish him well for a speedy recovery.) There was also a couple of Paralympians there but they didn’t give away too many details of their adventures. It seemed like a case of “what happens on tour, stays on tour” A huge pat on the back must go to Jocelyn Burgess who organised this function which was supported by the Cerebral Palsy Society. The feedback has been tremendous with people saying how wonderful it was to focus on our capabilities rather than our disabilities. |
