The Road to Leadership

“Leadership is a willingness to step into the darkness.” (Immanuel Koks) “We don’t discover leadership, we uncover it.” (Todd Fernie). These two quotes are just examples of the many thought provoking comments made during the Cerebral Palsy Society sponsored leadership course, held in September.

Throughout the day facilitator Todd Fernie energetically coaxed the group into discovering themselves, to help uncover each individual’s untapped leadership potential. Todd did this in a very professional entertaining style, accompanied by a wicked sense of humour.

“I enjoyed Todd’s presentation as he breathed life into the topic,” said group member Gabrielle Heaslip.

Todd presented his “Road to Leadership” introductory course in four modules. The first module discussed leadership styles and this was followed by an introduction to goal setting methods. After lunch the mechanics of perception and the mysteries of self were explored and the course ended with the offer of further individual coaching and mentoring.

Towards the end of the day the group decided that, open clear minded people with the courage to take risks when appropriate, were well down the road to take on the role of leadership.

“I learnt that it’s not enough to set goals. We must also have the courage to carry them through. Respect for other people’s opinion is important. To be a good leader we must have the ability to listen and actually hear what people are saying,” reflected Gabrielle.

Todd finished the course on a high note by extending an invitation to enrol in a free one on one mentoring program
